Summer Bruner, an American flutist, leads a diverse and continually expanding career as a performer and teacher. She has recently graduated from the University of North Texas with a BM in flute performance where she studied with renowned flutist, Dr. Mary Karen Clardy. Summer’s appreciation for music as an art guides her teaching philosophy and is reflected in her excellent musicianship.
Summer believes in the practice of making art for art’s sake. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Summer has first-hand experience with the extremely competitive nature of Texas band programs, participating in TMEA all-state on both the 5A and 6A levels and UIL state solo and ensemble. Through this, she learned that nothing is more detrimental to the growth of a young musician than the lesson that being a musician is about playing the fastest or playing works beyond skill level to merely impress judges. She teaches that some players play to beat the person next to them, but a true musician plays to develop a disposition and commitment towards the work itself. Summer has taught middle and high school players extensively at schools in the DFW area such as Aubrey, Lewisville, and Flower Mound.
Summer’s passion for performance is very apparent on stage and reflected in her extensive experience as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. She has been fortunate enough to perform with prestigious groups such as the University of North Texas Concert Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, as well as play for the university’s opera production of “La Rondine.” Summer believes that to perform is to cultivate a love for continuously learning and improving one’s musicianship. It is a practice of sheer stubbornness to continue to show up for your piece, no matter how big or small, that she wants to instill in others.
Summer also enjoys songwriting and music production on the side. Any opportunity to create inspiring music is an opportunity she will take. She loves her friends, and family, and focuses on happiness wherever she may find it.
